I appreciate your opinion on this as an employee. As a customer/consumer that ships all the time, all I felt was "chewed out" for doing something I have always done in all the other shipping stores before and after that one. I feel my comparison with the ketchup in right on target, as I was not asking them to provide a box, or to package my item in the box with packing, as all the other shipping stores I have used, be it UPS Stores, FedEx, or private owned have always charged me for those services and supplies, so <em>that is an expected charge</em>. Tape on the other hand is like condiments in a restaurant!
If the store I was at wants to go against the grain by charging for tape, then that's up to them, even though courtesy tape as the other stores call it, is a write off as an expense, and not a profit center, as cost of goods sold would be.
Now, the <strong>Bigger Picture</strong> in all this coming from a marketers perspective would be to make the customer feel wanted and happy to be in your store so as to get repeat business, otherwise why waste your advertising dollars to get people to use your services, just to make them feel badly for doing something that they would do in the majority of their competitors stores.

While googling, I happened to stumble upon your "rant." Here are my thoughts:

To save some hassle, if you had a tape gun in the car you should have taped it up and had it ready to go before you brought it into the store. If you had a tape gun in your car why didn't you use it?

Poor comparison with the ketchup/restaurant scenario. It's not the same thing. If you really wanted to think of it that way, it'd be like you going into their restaurant and bringing your own burger and asking to use their ketchup! It's seen as frugal. You chose not to buy their burger, but you want to sit down and eat at their restaurant and use their ketchup? Sounds outrageous to me!

Also I'd say you were rude for not even asking if it was okay to use their tape, before you grabbed it and started taping away. Even the people at Fedex HANDED it to you.
Tape costs money and the owners have to pay for that tape. You'd be surprised by how much tape is used on a daily basis and how expensive that can become.

As a drop location, UPS Stores are responsible for accepting your prepaid packages. That's it. It's your responsibility to have it taped up and ready to go.

UPS Stores make little profit from the pre-paid packages that you drop off. By grabbing their tape gun you are choosing to use their packaging materials, so you should be charged accordingly.

That's all, I'm not a franchise owner, but I used to work at a store. All I'm trying to do is give you a little bit of a perspective.

Thanks.

Great article Mike, I will definitely use some of this tips to promote my cleaning business. I've already done some of these,
but not all of them. This article gives you lots of ways to
help a small business such as mine to attract more customers
and get your business noticed.

I just wanted to post that I now have a Google+ account and Wow! This system even thought it's in Beta phase I like it a lot. I also downloaded the Android Google+ App and it works great, giving me the ability to post photos on the fly along with checking in using my phones on-board GPS.

I give Google+ an A+

It's a pity they have removed the HTML edition. For me it would be a great advantage. An alternative is http://docs.zoho.com/.
Hopefully soon put back. One of their strengths would be the HTML editor.

Greetings.

Thanks for asking,

It's unfortunate Google removed some very cool items from the new Google Docs version, and did not give any reason just this sentence:
"You'll probably notice that some features from the older version of Google documents aren't available yet. <strong>Don't worry: we'll be adding a lot of them soon</strong>. " of course no time as to when.
Here is a link to the Google Help Page about this: <a href="http://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=176442">See it here</a>

All we can do, is keep an eye out and see if they add it back in, it was very popular.

Small business owners do miss the boat, mostly because they don't have the luxury of having dedicated staff, to market and advertise them online. Or to keep track of the constant changes as the Web evolves.
That's where good people like you, that can help bring the business owner up to speed are so valuable right now.

Keep up the good work,

I really do agree with your strategy in using social media today.
So many small businesses are missing the boat - they're either not using social media at all or they're using it incorrectly. I've been advising my customers to get their own website showing the right content with the right keywords first. From there, they're chosing two social media channels to focus on and getting those set up and working together. We're seeing good results with this strategy!
