Contrast Text For Better Readability

Contrasting Text

The images below are from a previous article I wrote, where I discussed radio controlled cars.  Both images have the same information.  However, by creating titles, body text, bold text and underlines, along with some color highlighting, I’m able to organize the information and provide better readability. Without more than a few design elements I communicate how the information is organized.

Below is an example of a page without using any contrast:

After adding a little contrast to the page:

Contrasting Size & Proximity

There are other ways to create contrast—size is one of them.  One way is by changing the layout of the text.  You can see it in the image above and in the text of this blog post.  The heading title is larger than the rest of the text.  This lets you quickly scan the titles and make assumptions about how the information is organized, using bullet list helps to tell what it contains.

Contrast is a powerful way to communicate ideas.  There are all sorts of ways to use contrast in your designs, and not just with your graphics.  With your next article, make a deliberate attempt to use some contrast and see what happens.

Until next time,

PS. What are some ways you’ve used contrast in your articles?  Do you have any good examples?  Feel free to share them via the comments link below.
