I ran into this the other day, when I read several articles, and then later on that day, wrote an article and submitted it to EzineArticles. It’s true, they do look and freeze your account! Of course I was not doing a copy and paste, which you should NEVER do. I was just pulling from my head and even though it was a mix of what I had read, Me, Myself and I as the old saying goes. Ezine caught it, or I would have not known I had even done such a thing.
So, I went on the web and found a way to find out if I have duplicated someone’s content. And even better to see if someone had duplicated my content. It’s a site called, Copyscape.com it’s free or you can use a more in-depth service that you only pay a small amount for. (And No it’s not an affiliate link).
I have decided to check my articles, when I think my writing my be to close to someone elses that I might have locked away in my brain. Of course if you saw my New Years Post you already know, not much stays locked away for very long, so as long as I wait awhile after reading an article, I should be alright.
Now, as far as Google laying the slap down on you? Fact of Fiction… FACT. They will lay the smack down on you, IF you are in the habit of duplicating peoples content with the intent to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results.
Can Place Holder pages cause your site to be marked for duplicate content… FACT. If you are setting up pages with Fake/Place Holder content, you should use, “noindex” tags, (see example below). Then remove them when you replace the content, with your real content.
<meta name="robots" content="noindex"> and <meta name="googlebot" content="noindex">
Using the nifty “Printer Version” on your site, to give your visitors a way for make printed pages look good, is not counted as duplicate content… FICTION. If you use this type of link, Google may follow it and count it as duplicate content. FACT about this is they will probably not slap you for it, but will pick one to index. Of course again you can put a noindex tag, on the one you don’t want Google to index.
Tip: I like using a Plugin called Platinum SEO, which makes this as easy as clicking a button. And also handles much more. Here’s a shot of just the Tag Selector section below:

As you can see all you do is click a check box or button to create an Index Nofollow.
So as you can see there’s duplicate content and then there’s duplicate content, but as far as Google’s concerned, check out their information on this at Google Webmaster Central-Duplicate Content page.
Until next time,

PS. If you’re into blogging, I purchased and have been reading a great book called 31 Days to Build a Better Blog by Darren Rowse. Creator of Problogger.net one of the best resources for bloggers IMHO. If you get it, let me know how you like it in the comments.
