What Blog Type Is Right For You

Questions About Blog TypesI’d like to take some time and talk about the different types of blogs, and help you on the road picking out one for you.

When people think of a blog they usually think of a site like this one. It’s posted to regularly, on the same topic or niche. Which could be looked at as the type of subject matter, you find interesting, and want to enlighten the world to. This is definitely one type of blog, but there are many others. Let’s take a look at the different types of blogs, and how they are used. And hopefully, you will see one that would fit into the marketing strategy of your interest.

Micro Niche Blogs

These are the smallest of blog types and not really consider a blog per se, other than the fact that it can be done on a blog platform, such as WordPress.org. Please don’t confuse this type of blog with a “Micro Blogging Platform” such as Twitter or Tumblr.

A micro niche blog can be as small as a single page. When I say page I mean post on the blog (I’m not speaking literally of the “page” term in your dashboard. For this instance a page is considered a unique URL, and each post has a unique URL). Most of these types of blog are generally very small with at most 5 or 6 pages.

A micro niche blog generally targets one specific product with only a few or one specific keyword.

Here’s an example:

WordPress for Internet Marketers (this is not my site but an excellent example of a micro niche affiliate site, using WordPress.org software)

Because these sites are so small and target only a few or one keyword and one product the key to making money with them is doing lots and LOTS of them.

Niche Sites:

Similar to the Micro Niche Blog, but a little bigger than the micro niche blog generally ranging around 5 pages, but can be more. I would  not really consider this type of site a blog so much, anymore than the micro niche blog. It doesn’t get updated and really the only thing that makes it a blog to some, is that it’s built on WordPress.org software. These sites can target one or maybe even a few keywords, and products and are particularly good for placing  Adsense Ads on.

Here’s an example

Ezy Lawn Care, As you can see each post targets information about one keyword. This site is not currently ranking very well as it shows at this time a page rank of “0″… but still is bringing in some Adsense money.

Again, Because these sites are so small and target only a few or one keyword and one product the key to making money with them is doing lots of them. It doesn’t matter how much time you spend on your keyword research there will always be some sites that just don’t get much traction. You will probably end up making 80% of your money from 20% of your sites. (There’s that 80/20 Rule again) If you only have 10 sites that’s not going to amount to much. This is a “rinse and repeat” type of strategy.

Niche Blogs:

This is the type of blog, most are working on now. These are more like blogs because they have lots of posts, covering different topics and have updated content on a consistent basis. Or at least anywhere from 35 to 100 posts on them. How do you know how many it should have? Well it depends on such things as, how many keywords you are targeting and how long you want to work on this blog.

Here’s an example of a niche site. It is about Radio Controlled Craft (I have YET to be able to really make much money from this site… although there are people who say hobby sites do quite well for them. So all the posts on this blog/site relate somehow to radio controlled things.

Radio Controlled Craft does bring in a little Adsense money, some affiliate cash, but only about enough to buy a coffee at Star Bucks now and again. About what you would expect from a site getting only a handful of page views a day. Of course this was only setup as a learning site, during a workshop I was attending. Otherwise I would have put more time and research into the subject of radio control, which would make all the difference in the world.

While you have more pages, and more chances to get people to your site these niche blogs do have an endpoint, and are not meant to go on forever. This is another strategy where you will create multiple blogs and your success will depend on your ability to keep building more sites and promoting these niche sites.

So, what if I don’t want to build a bunch of  blogs/sites? Then what can I build?

Authority Blogs:

These are the big daddy of blogs… one key subject per person type blogs.  An authority blog takes time, love and commitment, did I mention time. I am more and more moving toward the authority blog strategy. This blog is an example of an authority blog. What do you need to excel with an authority blog?

  1. Commitment
  2. Time
  3. Passion for your subject
  4. Time
  5. Commitment
  6. Patience
  7. Commitment
  8. Did I say Time!

Are you feeling the my vibe here? While I love authority blogging it is by NO means a quick and easy way to make money. You have to love helping others and sharing what you know.

Authority blogs give you the most leeway when it comes to monetization as well. You can sell your own products or services. You can use affiliate products and include Adsense, sell ad space to others or paid sponsors. The sky’s the limit.

The key though with an authority blog is to create a community. You become a resource a place people can count on for information, to ask questions or whatever it is they’re looking for. There are amazing authority blogs in just about every niche. So think about what it is you love in life or work and start a blog about it!

Until next time,
